Case Study: Brunata Water Utility Solution 

Valsgård Waterworks wanted better insight into water consumption and improved opportunities to detect leaks at an earlier stage. Following the installation of 548 digital ultrasonic water meters from Brunata, the utility now has access to real-time data on both water consumption and pumped volume, providing a much stronger foundation for ensuring reliable operations and accurate customer billing.

Better Insight into Water Consumption and Leaks

Valsgård Waterworks has maintained an exceptionally low level of water loss for many years. However, the utility wanted to future-proof its operations and improve its ability to respond quickly should leaks occur in the distribution network. 

‘We have been fortunate to avoid accidents and pipe damage for many years and have an extremely low level of water loss. However, that does not change the need to future-proof our operations. With digital meters, we are taking an important step toward ensuring that water loss remains low,’ says Anders Jensen, Chairman of Valsgård Waterworks.

Previously, meter readings required physical visits. ‘In the past, we had to read meters manually on site. Today, we can monitor both the volume of water being pumped and consumer usage directly from the office.’ 

An End-to-End Solution from Meter to Data Platform

The project was carried out in partnership with Brunata, which supplied and installed the new digital meters for Valsgård Waterworks. 

Brunata provides a complete solution for water utilities, including meters, installation, network infrastructure, data platform, and support. This means the utility has a single partner responsible for the entire solution, from installation through day-to-day operation. 

The integrated solution makes it easier for the utility to access data and monitor the water supply without having to coordinate multiple vendors.

More Accurate Data and Greater Peace of Mind for Consumers

The new ultrasonic meters continuously measure water flow and provide more accurate readings than traditional mechanical meters. This gives the utility a stronger data foundation and makes billing more transparent for consumers. 

‘We can now identify water loss earlier and with greater precision. It provides an entirely different level of insight. At the same time, we can document household water consumption with a very high degree of accuracy, making invoicing more transparent,’ explains Anders Jensen. For example, if the meter records water usage during the night, it may indicate a leak or a running toilet. 

‘Responsibility for leaks on private property rests with the individual consumer. Therefore, digital meters are not only valuable for us as a water utility. They also provide significant benefits to consumers, as they can detect even very small changes in consumption patterns and help identify minor leaks within their own systems,’ Anders Jensen emphasizes. 

Data as the Foundation for Future Operations

Although Valsgård Waterworks already operates with very low water loss, it sees digital meters as an important investment in the future of its operations. 

The continuous flow of data enables more effective monitoring of the distribution network and makes it easier to respond quickly to irregularities.
