Press release

It is time to act to protect our drinking water – across Europe.

4. November 2025

This week, during the Water Innovation Europe 2025 conference in Copenhagen, leaders from the water sector came together to address one of Europe’s most pressing – and still often overlooked – challenges: water scarcity.

Before the event, we – Sofia Lettenbichler, Managing Director of WE Data Europe, and Brunata’s Jesper Holm Kristoffersen, Kristian Voldby Olsen, and Tony Francke – had the privilege of meeting with Denmark’s Minister for the Environment, Magnus Heunicke.

The Minister was eager to learn more about how smart technology can help reduce water consumption – and we were proud to contribute to a dialogue marked by openness and shared ambition.

Sofia presented WE Data Europe’s newly published Smart Water Metering Study, which offers compelling evidence: when people gain insight into their water use, consumption drops. Awareness works.

At Brunata, we added real-world perspectives – demonstrating the difference between having no metering at all, using analogue meters with annual readings, and switching to digital solutions that provide daily data directly to residents.

Across Europe – even in Denmark – drinking water is becoming a scarce resource. The pressure is mounting. Summers are getting hotter, and groundwater levels are dropping.

The good news? We already have the technology and the means to make water use visible. What we need now is the political support and willingness to make it happen.

We are encouraged to see the Danish EU Presidency giving this issue the attention it deserves. Because making water consumption visible is  not just smart – it is essential.
